Derby maintained their excellent recent record over the Baggies with a smash-and-grab raid at the Hawthorns that spoiled the famous stadium’s 125th anniversary celebrations. It was a three points that they scarcely deserved given how the hosts dominated possession and registered eighteen attempts to County’s four.
Ultimately, however, Albion rarely tested Zetterström in the Rams’ goal despite their superiority and, while they should have won the game, shortcomings in front of goal that seem to be frustratingly persistent were in evidence once again.
Six goals from the opening five games is actually the lowest by an Albion side in the second tier since 2006 when Bryan Robson’s newly relegated team scored just five goals by this stage. The lowest number of goals after five games scored in our comparison seasons is four; the first was in 1994, when Keith Burkinshaw’s team had yet to record a victory and were bottom of the table having yet to play a home game in the league due to the redevelopment of the stadium and, secondly, in 2000 for Megson’s team that would ultimately make the play-offs.
Looking ahead to the next match, Albion are unbeaten in game six since 1998 although the only victory on the road in those matches was in 2001 when Scott Dobie’s double earned all three points at Watford.
